Living Large In A Small Town

Sticks and Stones April 10, 2012

My father has often said that whenever the urge to garden comes over him, he lies down until the feeling passes.  I seem to have inherited his lack of a green thumb.  It’s not that I don’t enjoy gardening, it’s just that I have trouble keeping greenery alive.  I also don’t have sense of how things will look once any surviving vegetation grows in, so my garden tends to look rather wild and neglected. My flowerbeds are more like flower bedlam!

The solution is to hire an expert – someone who can tame our unruly yard and elevate our curb appeal with winding walkways, rock flowerbeds and retaining walls that are as pleasing to look at as the flora that surrounds them.

Andy Harding, owner of Stone Fences, has the skills to turn a jungle into an oasis. Not your garden-variety landscaping company – Andy’s beautiful stonework should be called Grandscaping!  Having grown up in Muskoka, Andy brings a beautiful sensibility to each and every project.  He uses locally sourced goods and suppliers to create the yard of your dreams — from ponds and pathways to flowerbeds and fire pits.  Whatever look you want to achieve, Stone Fences can help you do it.   They are sure to become a perennial favorite.

The birds have returned, tulips are making an appearance in our garden and the sun is shining a bit longer each day – thank you daylight savings!

Signs of spring renewal are everywhere.  The world has traded in its winter-weary attire for something light and lovely.   The urge to purge is so strong that I have to believe spring-cleaning is encoded in our DNA.  This desire to get rid of the old and make way for the new shouldn’t be reserved strictly for our homes though.  It’s also the perfect time of year to prepare and prime our bodies and skin for the summer months ahead.

Victoria Bourque Beauty Boutique (a big thank you to my sister, Nancy, for letting me know about this gem.) is the perfect place to help you slough off the old winter blues and make way for a radiant new you!

Victoria Bourque, whose very name evokes old Hollywood Glamour, is a certified esthetician and make-up artist with an impeccable attention to detail – from perfectly sculpting your brows to targeted facials that refine, tone and get your skin glowing!

One word that sums up Victoria’s beauty ethos – FLAWLESS.  Bring her your tired, your stressed, your dehydrated and she will pamper, primp and preen you until you are red-carpet ready!

This is also a one–stop shop.  You can top off your look with the perfect cut-and-color. Victoria rounds out her beauty team with first-class hair stylists such as Brittany Buck, a certified Redken Color Specialist with a flare for precision cuts.

Victoria and her team will have you ready for your close-up in no time.   Best part – VBBB is open on Mondays!!

Bradford’s Exhale Spa & Salon is located in a refurbished grand old home with glossy wood floors, honey-yellow walls, a flickering fireplace and plenty of windows allowing natural light and views of tree-lined grounds.  You feel immediately calm and that’s without factoring in their many soul-soothing beauty treatments, like their healing stone massage, aromatics deep cleansing facial, or collagen eye lift treatment.  For those with jam-packed schedules they even offer mini or express versions of their spa services.

The spa experience also carries over to the hair salon where the reclining shampoo chairs and tilted bowls allow you to enjoy the shampoo and scalp massage TREATment without straining your neck.

Their Lazy Bones Café serves up a refreshing selection of muffins, soups, salads and sandwiches that will delight the most discerning palate. In a word, delicious!

Founder Patricia Ristich has assembled a top notch team to help you put your best face (and crown of locks) forward – stem to stern they will buff and polish you and send you off into the day with a rosy glow and even rosier outlook.

Leave It To Green Beaver March 14, 2009

Green Beaver is a Canadian company with a big heart and even bigger mission to rid the world of beauty products containing icky chemicals and additives and anything else that doesn’t belong on your skin. The result is a family of products that’s 100% natural, biodegradable, vegan and gluten-free –good for you as well as the planet (Mary Brickell of Healthy by Choice turned me onto this amazing line.)

I’ve tried (AND LOVE) Green Beaver’s grapefruit and aloe face wash!  It has an exquisitely clean and fresh grapefruit scent and it leaves your skin baby soft, even during the dry winter months.  Their bamboo face-scrub is equally decadent proving you don’t have to give up luxury when you “green” your beauty routine. Their products are reasonably priced, often costing less than adulterated competitors, and leave your skin feeling and looking radiantly beautiful – your old products will turn green with envy.
